Our Story

Entopia began its journey with David Goh, a young teacher with interest and passion for butterflies. Simply inspired, he set out to establish a tropical butterfly farm as a tourist destination in Penang. In 1986, this self-taught entomologist, founded the tropical world’s first butterfly and insect sanctuary, known as the Penang Butterfly Farm.

Over the years, Penang Butterfly Farm had been visited by more than 5 million local and international visitors, and it became the pride and joy of Penang. During its prime, it garnered many awards and was voted by visitors of TripAdvisor, acclaiming to be one of the best destinations in Penang.

“Entopia exists to fulfill a greater mission and we have devoted ourselves into breeding research. After 30 years, we have successfully learned how to breed over 120 species of butterflies. We aspire to achieve beyond this, as scientists have discovered more than 1,100 species of butterflies in Malaysia alone.”

Chin Boon Tat
COO of Entopia

“Lessons from nature have to be free from the confines of the classroom to be meaningful. That’s why I dreamed of an idyllic garden to share my passion.”

David Goh
Founder of Penang Butterfly Farm

“It is this same desire to help people live in better harmony with nature that led to our rebirth as Entopia. Imagine nature’s largest classroom and discovery hub, where the hidden jewels of nature are now free to come out and play. This is our very own Entomological Utopia.”

Joseph Goh
CEO of Entopia
